$15 million grant to support Indigenous Mental Health First Aid Training to 2024

16 Sep 2021

Media release - Minister Wyatt

The Morrison Government is providing $15 million over three years to the National Wellbeing Alliance Pty Ltd to deliver mental health first aid training for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia.

The National Wellbeing Alliance Pty Ltd was selected as the national provider following a competitive grants process. They will deliver culturally safe and appropriate mental health first aid courses to upskill participants in recognising when to seek assistance and how to assist family and other community members in need of support.

Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM, MP, said protection of the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is a critical priority for the Morrison Government.

“The Morrison Government has made mental health a national priority and this latest investment continues our commitment to work towards zero deaths by suicide,” Minister Wyatt said.

“As an experienced training provider, the National Wellbeing Alliance, is well placed to deliver training to community members and to staff in service providers funded by the National Indigenous Australians Agency.”

“This will increase awareness and build capacity in Indigenous families and communities to recognise the signs of potential mental health issues and find appropriate pathways for assistance.”

This funding complements the Morrison Government’s record $2.3 billion investments in mental health and suicide prevention initiatives announced as part of the Budget and supports efforts to achieve outcome 14 of Closing the Gap.
