The Australian Electoral Commission is urging all Australians, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, to enrol to vote in the federal election on 7 September.

“All Australians aged 18 and over should enrol as soon as possible as the electoral roll will close at 8.00pm on Monday, 12 August,” the Director of the AEC’s Indigenous Electoral Participation Program, Bob Eckhardt said.

"Before you can vote, your name must be added to the electoral roll. You will also need to update your enrolment details if you have moved house since the last election.”

Mr Eckhardt said enrolling is easy and can be done online in just a few minutes at www.aec.gov.au/Indigenous.

“Initiatives such as online enrolment and the AEC’s new Facebook app make it easier than ever to enrol or to update your enrolment details,” Mr Eckhardt said.

Enrolment forms are also available from Australia Post, Medicare or Centrelink, or Australian Electoral Commission offices.

“Voting gives you a say in who will represent you in federal Parliament and gives you a say in the decisions that affect your future and the future of your community,” Mr Eckhardt said.

“Every vote is important. Every vote can make a difference. So it’s important you don’t miss out on having your say.”
