• $550,000 of funding for 11 Indigenous grass-root organisations to increase delivery of much needed work  to address safety, increase community capacity to build stronger families, and women’s leadership.
• Payments of $50,000 per organisation, funded through the Indigenous Advancement Strategy (IAS).
• The funding will support the design and delivery of practical actions to meet the need of women in their communities.

The Turnbull Government is investing $50,000 to help eleven Indigenous organisations across Australia deliver practical actions to grow women’s leadership capacity, improve safety and build stronger families and communities.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion said that addressing family violence, increasing community capacity to build stronger families and increase women’s leadership remains a priority for the Turnbull Government.

“This year’s NAIDOC theme – Because of her, we can! – is a fitting platform from which to make this announcement.

“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women play a critical role as leaders and agents for change in their families and local communities. We are committed to ensuring Indigenous women continue to be a strong voice in their respective communities.

“With this $550,000 funding, we are investing in the skills and leadership of strong Indigenous women, and we are taking the steps needed to close the gap in Indigenous disadvantage and build a better future for First Australians.

This funding will support organisations like Baabayn Aboriginal Corporation in Western Sydney, who provide a culturally safe space for people to nurture confidence and begin the healing process, and the Marninwarntikura Fitzroy Women’s Resource Centre in Fitzroy Crossing, which seeks to encourage women around the region to come together and address long-term holistic solutions for their community.

“These eleven organisations have a strong track record of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, their families and communities.

“This funding will assist these organisations to increase their work to meet the priorities of their local communities – a win-win for all involved.

“I am pleased to be part of a government that has a strong economic plan in place which enables such vital programmes to be delivered,” Minister Scullion said.
