Palm Island (Bwgcolman)
Palm Island is an Aboriginal community approx 65 kilometres northeast of Townsville in northern Queensland.
It is also known as Bwgcolman which means 'many people' because of the more than 50 different tribal groups sent to the island.
Traditional owners: Manbarra people
Languages: English, and Yumplatok (Torres Strait Creole)
Population (ABS Census 2016): 2298 (93.8% Aboriginal and Torrers Strait Islander)

Back to School March and breakfast a hit on Palm Island.
The Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion has announced funding to help Palm Island commemorate its history and proudly celebrate its culture in centenary events beginning in January 2018.
The Coalition Government is supporting Palm Island to develop a comprehensive plan for economic development through a $50,000 grant from the Indigenous Advancement Strategy.
