Melanie Harris is helping First Nations businesses go global, with support from Austrade and the Australian Government’s First Nations trade and investment agenda.

Melanie Harris is passionate about helping First Nations businesses grow and succeed on the global stage.

As the Head of Indigenous Export at the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), Melanie works directly with Indigenous businesses to build export capability, showcase success, and connect with international markets. Her work is part of the Australian Government’s broader commitment to First Nations economic self-determination through trade and investment.

“We’re seeing incredible innovation from First Nations businesses – from bushfoods and skincare to tourism and cultural design,” Melanie says.

“Our role is to help them grow, connect, and thrive in global markets.”

Melanie will deliver the keynote address at the International First Nations Female Entrepreneurs Lunch, hosted by Kinaway Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by the Australian Government. The event celebrates the strength, innovation, and resilience of Indigenous women in business, and explores how entrepreneurial pathways are rooted in Country, culture, and innovation.

Melanie has over 25 years of experience across international trade, project management, organisational transformation, and leadership in both the public and private sectors. She was also Australia’s first female Indigenous Trade and Investment Commissioner, posted to Kuala Lumpur, where she supported Australian businesses expanding into Malaysia and Brunei.

Now, through Austrade’s Go Global Export Academy, Melanie and her team are helping First Nations businesses take the next step. A recent session focused on how businesses can benefit from the Australia–UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) – the first Australian trade agreement to include a dedicated chapter on First Nations trade and investment.

“This is a game-changer,” Melanie says.

“It recognises the value of Indigenous knowledge, cultural expression, and enterprise – and opens doors for First Nations businesses in sectors like food, tourism, and the green economy.”

To support First Nations businesses on their export journey, Austrade offers a range of tools and resources:

  • Go Global Export Academy – Tailored sessions, including those focused on CEPA, offering practical guidance and expert insights.

  • Export Business Portal – A central hub for export advice, market insights, and support programs.

Melanie is a lifelong learner who thrives on building strong relationships and connecting with people. She’s always curious, always growing, and always looking for ways to make a positive impact.

Support for the International First Nations Female Entrepreneurs Lunch contributes to Closing the Gap Outcome 8 – Strong economic participation and development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
