Supporting Stronger Communities in the Torres Strait

Three army dentists working on a patient

With support from the NIAA, the Australian Army is making a meaningful impact for Torres Strait communities.

With support from the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA), the Australian Army is delivering the Army Aboriginal Community Assistance Program (AACAP), which is making a meaningful impact in the Torres Strait communities of Warraber, Erub and Poruma throughout 2025.

AACAP is a collaborative initiative that brings together infrastructure development, health services, and training opportunities for remote Indigenous communities. This year, the 2nd Health Brigade is on the ground, providing essential healthcare services including dentistry, nursing, physiotherapy, and environmental health. AACAP has improved health and living standards in First Nations communities and created Indigenous employment opportunities during and after project operations.

From dental extractions that bring back smiles on Warraber Island, to environmental health specialists improving local conditions, the breadth of expertise being shared is remarkable. These efforts not only deliver practical outcomes but also foster deep cultural exchange and lasting relationships.
