REAL Program launches supporting transitions from the justice system
The REAL Program supports First Nations people leaving the justice system to reconnect with community and build pathways to employment and learning through culturally informed, community-led support initiatives.
The Reconnection, Employment and Learning (REAL) Program launched in 2025 and is a voluntary program to support First Nations people transition from the justice system into employment and education pathways.
This new initiative recognises that strong outcomes are supported by people having confidence, connection and opportunity. REAL focuses on building these foundations while enabling access to learning and long-term employment pathways that help people achieve their goals.
Delivered by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, Phase 1 of the program has been rolled out in selected correctional facilities across Australia.
REAL provides personalised mentoring and support to build pathways to employment, education and training opportunities. In addition, it will facilitate greater connection to languages, Country and culture, where appropriate.
The program will expand in late 2026, extending to additional correctional facilities as part of Phase 2. Eligible organisations will be able to apply for the next grant round when it opens.
