Minister Scullion welcomes appointment of Andrea Mason as Commissioner for the Disability Royal Commission

5 Apr 2019

The Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, has welcomed the appointment of Ms Andrea Mason OAM as a Commissioner for the Royal Commission into violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with a disability, announced today by the Prime Minister, the Hon Scott Morrison MP.

Andrea Mason is a Karoni and Ngaanyatjarra woman from Central Australia with an outstanding record of service and dedication to improving the lives of all Indigenous Australians.

Ms Mason has devoted her life to advocating for and supporting Indigenous women and families through her work leading the Ngaanyatjarra, Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara (NPY) Women's Council – giving a powerful voice to Indigenous women and families in the vast Central Australian region spaning three state and territory borders.

Ms Mason will bring her passion, drive, and commitment to justice to this important role and I hope that Indigenous communities and individuals share my confidence in Ms Mason’s ability to provide a culturally safe platform to seek justice through this royal commission.

Like the NPY Women’s Council, her drive and compassion also crosses borders and she is committed to, and passionate about, a society where everyone gets a fair deal.

Andrea is an inspirational leader and social reformer and her achievements are too many to list but her leadership and commitment has already been recognised after winning the Telstra Business Woman of the Year award and was a finalist for the 2017 Australian of the Year.

Ms Mason has also co-chaired the Prime Minister’s Indigenous Advisory Council since 2015 which provides advice to the Prime Minister and to the government about all aspects of policy affecting Indigenous Australians. Ms Mason has resigned from this role to take up her appointment as a Commissioner and I thank her for her years of work and representation on the IAC and for her frank, fearless and wise counsel.

The Royal Commission will examine all forms of violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation in institutional settings and all other settings where these abuses occur including workplaces, schools, home and the community.
