Minister Scullion: Binjari 99-year housing lease
Today the Binjari Community Aboriginal Corporation and the Coalition Government have executed a historic 99-year lease over public housing in the community living area of Binjari in the Northern Territory.
This is the first 99-year housing lease over all social housing lots in a community in the Northern Territory and the first in a Community Living Area. The lease puts in place secure and long-term tradeable tenure arrangements over public housing in Binjari.
Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, congratulated the Binjari Community Aboriginal Corporation for executing the lease and said it would lead to positive outcomes for local residents and support Government investment in housing.
“As a result of this lease, 11 new houses will be built and there will be upgrades to 16 existing houses. Scoping work has already started in the community,” Minister Scullion said.
“In addition, residents will also be able to access critical housing services like repairs and maintenance as well as allowing for tenancy management reform.”
The Government has also provided $300,000 to the Binjari Community Aboriginal Corporation to purchase capital equipment to boost its building and construction business that employs local residents and delivers community managed housing maintenance.
The lease also provides a mix of housing options in Binjari and will provide residents with the option to buy their own home if they wish to in the future. “This outcome is the result of collaboration between the land owners Binjari Community Aboriginal Corporation, and the Australian and Northern Territory governments,” Minister Scullion said.
“This lease demonstrates the Coalition Government’s commitment to land tenure reform that respects the views of traditional owners and our ongoing approach to work in partnership with Indigenous communities.
“The Coalition will continue to work in collaboration with the Northern Territory Government and Binjari Community Aboriginal Corporation to ensure the housing investment provides jobs and business opportunities for Binjari residents.”
