Who or what inspires you?

I am most inspired by those moments where a student approaches me and shares with me some of their history and their families story. For three years I was involved in an afterschool based homework club for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in a primary school setting. I had a student share with me that if it wasn't for that space, they would never have an opportunity to learn, grow and develop who they are as an Aboriginal Australian. Without the homework club, they would not have been allowed to foster a greater sense of identity and pride in their culture. This was a proud moment!

My time there was monumental in shaping me to be the educator I am today. The cultural capacity and awareness I have, as well as the value and respect I hold even more so towards community is a direct result of my time there and yarning with elders, families and community members.

Where would you like to see your community in the future?

I would love to see my local community embrace in a more respectful way, the culture and history of our First Nations people. I would love to see more importance placed on exposing all students to a greater understanding and awareness of Aboriginal culture.
