Deadly Awards inspire Australia

A good role model can be hard to find but there was no shortage of them at the 17th annual Deadly Awards.
The 2011 Deadlys Opera House event in Sydney on Tuesday, recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders at the top of their fields in art, music, sport and a range of community endeavours.
Through an improved Deadlys voting system this year, designed to better include remote and rural communities, a record number of almost 80,000 people voted for the winners, says Deadlys artistic director Gavin Jones.
“The magic of the Deadlys is that it really gives every Aboriginal person a say,” Jones says. “Hopefully every nominee recognises the huge privilege that it is to be nominated by your own community for exceeding in what you do.” view full story
