Shared Responsibility Agreement
The Mirriuwung and Kija people, the traditional owners of the East Kimberley, want to expand education and training opportunities for their young people using the Gelganyem Trust.
The trust draws on royalties received through a recently negotiated Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) with the Argyle Diamond Mine.
Traditional owners benefi ting from the trust live in a variety of situations, from towns like Kununurra to very remote communities and outstations. People living in remote places have difficulty accessing education and training.
This SRA matches Australian Government investment with traditional owner contributions to a fund for education and training through the Gelganyem Trust.
The Australian Government’s contribution will help the trust to provide for young people’s educational needs through tertiary scholarships, travel, traineeships and boarding fees for high school students.
The Gelganyem Trust is also seeking contributions to their education and training fund from other sources.
