Shared Responsibility Agreement
K’Gari is the Aboriginal name for Fraser Island, traditional home of the Butchella people. They feel strongly about the need to improve their community’s wellbeing through cultural awareness and education.
Under their SRA, the community will design and run an education and cultural program involving camps for young people on K’Gari. Elders will work with young people to teach them about their traditional lands and cultural practices. Cultural training will also be combined with career planning and mentoring. The young people will be supported after these programs through a network of service providers.
The Australian Government will provide funds for the education and cultural activities, including transport and resources for camping. The Government will also provide funds for a youth services officer, and upgrade the sewerage system on the current community lease at K’Gari.
