Shared Responsibility Agreement
In Innisfail a tourist operator has formed a partnership with the Indigenous community (through Baddagun Aboriginal Corporation) to provide traditional dance performances at Paronella Park, a popular tourist destination 20 kilometres south of the town. Together they have developed an award-winning Rainforest Aboriginal Culture and Heritage enterprise.
About half the Indigenous population of Innisfail is under 24 years old. The area has plenty of employment opportunities, especially in tourism, yet not many of its younger Indigenous residents have jobs.
The community is keen to strengthen the relationship with Paronella Park and other local businesses to develop more jobs for the community and in particular its young people.
The SRA will enable the community to develop more cultural experiences that will provide real jobs as well as training, skills development and mentoring opportunities. A project manager will be employed to manage administration issues for the performers and to develop a broader employment strategy for the community.
The community will identify young people to be performers, transport them to and from Paronella Park, and provide cultural training.
The Australian Government will fund the construction of a cover over the performance area, an upgrade of the surrounding cultural and performance facilities, and the purchase of lighting and sound equipment.
