Shared Responsibility Agreement
The women of Doomadgee want their own centre as a base for a range of activities.
Doomadgee is a very remote and relatively self-sufficient community. Its main services include a general store, post office, police station, school, health clinic, hospital and aged care facility. The local CDEP is the largest employer, with 283 participants.
Under the SRA, a community centre for women will be added to these facilities and services. It will provide a venue for women’s business, a place to network and share ideas, a means to develop women’s leadership skills and strategies to improve the community’s health and well-being. In time, the women hope the centre will include services such as a laundromat, a hairdressing salon and an arts and crafts facility.
The Australian Government will provide funds to complete and fit out the centre and provide CDEP places to help with the labour.
Local Indigenous women will promote the centre as a community resource, and ensure it is treated with respect. The community will provide labour to set up the centre and will work with local women to develop activities and business opportunities that can be run from the centre.
