Shared Responsibility Agreement

The Larrakia people want to maintain and promote traditional culture through design and painting for young people ‘at risk’. The opportunity for a community art project arose when Vopac Ltd offered Larrakia Nation the opportunity to paint one of the large fuel storage tanks they operate at East Arm in Darwin.

Larrakia artists worked with a group of young people from town camps to design and paint the tank. The young people were involved in all aspects of the project from initial design to completion as part of a training program in public art application and sign writing.

The Larrakia Nation provided the cultural knowledge and artistic skills to teach and represent Larrakia culture through the mural. The Australian Government and private enterprise funded the project. Young people now have marketable skills that can be used in other community art or design projects in Darwin.
