Shared Responsibility Agreement
Wadeye is the largest Indigenous community in the Northern Territory and the site of a Council of Australian Governments (COAG) trial, led by the Department of Family and Community Services. As part of this trial, the Thamarrurr Regional Council is working with governments to improve housing and improve the circumstances of women, families and young people in the community.
The SRA provides for the construction of more houses to overcome housing shortages and provide opportunities for training and local jobs. The community is also taking part in programs to fix existing homes.
The Wadeye Palngun Warangat (Women’s Association) promotes women’s and family activities. Through the Ngepan Patha Centre, local women are being trained in business and computing skills, developing a sewing business, and organising social events for themselves and the community.
A ‘no school, no pool’ policy, and other community initiatives, have seen an increase in school attendance.
Governments are funding the construction and clean up of houses and the programs being run out of the Ngepan Patha Centre.
