Shared Responsibility Agreement
The Gapuwiyak community wants to improve community governance and provide constructive activities for young people, including engaging them in CDEP.
Recently Gapuwiyak Community Council has been struggling to provide local government services not only for its 950 residents but also to 10 smaller communities.
At a community meeting, community members decided to assist the Council by taking on some of its responsibilities under more traditional governance arrangements.
The SRA provides for the construction of a multi-purpose centre, the re-establishment of the CDEP, and healthy activities for young people.
The Australian Government will fund the construction of the centre and the employment of a consultant for six months. The consultant will work closely with the community council to help them build their governance capacity and plan for a sustainable CDEP Programme.
The community will provide labour to rebuild the centre. Community members will stop the sale of take-away food to children during school hours. The Community Council will work with the school to organise activities at the community centre for young people.
