Shared Responsibility Agreement
Angkweleyelengkwe and Thangkenharenge are two small communities in the Barrow Creek area. Community residents want to continue living on their ancestral lands while enjoying more of the amenities and opportunities available to other Australians.
The Indigenous Housing Authority of the Northern Territory is already constructing three new houses for the communities and community volunteers are working to prepare sites for the houses and build fences around them.
Through their SRA, the communities will continue to clean up their existing camps, and plant and maintain an orchard.
The communities also want to make sure their children attend school. As the nearest school is at Neutral Junction, 15 kilometres away, parents will develop a roster system to take the children to and from school. They will also ensure their children are properly prepared for the school day, starting with a good breakfast.
The Neutral Junction School will provide a venue for community and school activities and keep records of students’ participation and attendance.
Governments will contribute the materials and equipment needed to clean up the communities and plant the orchard.
The Australian Government is also funding a coordinator’s position for this SRA and those in the nearby communities of Tara and Wilora to supervise activities.
