Shared Responsibility Agreement
The Alpurrurlum community needs a place to hold meetings, health education sessions and training in computers, community radio and the internet.
The community and the Southern Barkley Aboriginal Corporation (the local CDEP) have formed a partnership with government to build a community centre including an internet cafe.
Alpurrurlum is a close-knit community that already has a good record in self-sufficiency. The Southern Barkley Aboriginal Corporation has contracts to construct housing and roads in the area and has taken on extra apprentices to help with the workload.
Community businesses and contract profits have contributed to the establishment of a store, health clinic and primary school and the construction of 76 houses for the community’s 753 mainly Indigenous residents.
The community will provide apprentices for the construction of the centre, who will also undertake structured training. When the centre is up and running, the community will be responsible for maintenance and operational costs.
The health clinic and school have both agreed to hold training in the centre.
Local Centrelink recipients will help out with the internet cafe, community radio and arts and crafts activities.
Governments will provide funds for the foundations and building materials and equipment for the internet cafe. Additional CDEP places including a coordinator will also be provided.
