Shared Responsibility Agreement

The Malabugilmah community was established in 1982 and constructed very quickly. Some parts of the community plan (such as the sporting oval) were never completed, and much of the infrastructure is in poor condition.

The community want to have the facilities that other communities enjoy and have signed an SRA that will repair and upgrade the wastewater treatment system and complete the oval. The SRA represents a partnership between the community, governments and the Southern Cross University.

The community will provide labour and undertake training to help with the works. They will operate the waste-water facility in the longer term, through activities such as cyclical testing, pruning trees, mowing, pump priming and coordinating licensed trades to meet the maintenance schedules.

The upgraded facility will use environmentally friendly technology and recycled water will be used to irrigate the oval.

The community will continue the clean up of community areas, and hold regular sporting and social activities on the oval.

The Australian and New South Wales Governments will jointly provide funds for the waste-water works and sporting oval. The Australian Government will fund necessary training and ensure enough CDEP positions are available. The New South Wales Government will provide sporting equipment and a Sport and Recreation Coordinator to organise sports programs and coaching clinics.

Clarence Valley Council will help with maintenance and develop an assetmanagement plan.

Southern Cross University will provide teaching resources, supervise an Indigenous Masters student, and allow use of a water-sampling laboratory at reduced rates.
