Shared Responsibility Agreement

In Muswellbrook, the Aboriginal community is partnering with the local Police Citizens Youth Club to run Hot Wheels, an exciting venture that will help young people with driver training and gaining drivers licences, and teach mechanical skills so they can fix up and use second-hand vehicles.

Young Aboriginal people in Muswellbrook want to get into local jobs. They know that having a driver’s licence and being able to do basic vehicle maintenance and repair are advantages in a competitive job market. The Hot Wheels initiative will link to private-sector work experience and real job opportunities.

Hunter Valley Aboriginal Corporation and Wanaruah Local Aboriginal Land Council, both based in Muswellbrook, are working with the local ICC to implement Hot Wheels.

Government through the SRA is providing a youth services officer to link the young people to mainstream employment services. The Police Citizens Youth Club will contribute a part-time youth officer to support Hot Wheels, and the local TAFE will offer career counselling and mechanical training.

The local community will nominate young people for Hot Wheels, and parents and other community members will mentor the participants. To get into Hot Wheels, the young people need to commit to ‘no alcohol, no drugs’ while they are participating and repay any traffic fines owing. On completion, they could become mentors for new participants.
