Applications are open for the 2017 National Indigenous Youth Parliament (NIYP).

The NIYP is a week-long leadership program for Indigenous Australians aged 16 to 25, to be held in Canberra in May 2017.

Electoral Commissioner, Tom Rogers, said this is a golden opportunity to learn about government and leadership directly from the people making decisions that affect Indigenous communities.

"The AEC will bring to Canberra 50 young Indigenous Australians, six from each state and territory and two from the Torres Strait Islands," Mr Rogers said.

The Australian Government has paid tribute to Mr Jerry Stephen Snr, a distinguished Torres Strait Islander war veteran who passed away last month. Mr Stephen Snr was believed to be the oldest surviving Torres Strait Islander veteran from World War II.

Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry

The Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, and the Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry, have paid tribute to Ms Margaret Lawton who passed away last week in Rockhampton. 

Minister Scullion said Ms Lawton was a Ghungalu and Garingbail traditional owner and respected member of the Fitzroy Basin Elders Committee.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, has paid tribute to Dr Gumana AO, who passed away in Arnhem Land earlier this week.

“Dr Gumana was a senior Yolngu man and leader of the Dhalwangu clan whose many achievements spanned decades across arts, culture and Indigenous rights,” Minister Scullion said.

“He led an extraordinary life, advocating passionately for the advancement of Aboriginal people through land rights and the homelands movement.

The Northern Land Council (NLC) has re-elected Samuel Bush-Blanasi as its Chairman, with John Christophersen elected Deputy Chairman at a Full Council meeting held at Timber Creek today.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs and Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, congratulated the Chair and Deputy Chair on their election to important positions within the leadership of land rights in the Northern Territory.

“I welcome Mr Bush-Blanasi's reappointment and continued leadership of the Northern Land Council since 2013,” Minister Scullion said.

On this Remembrance Day, I want to pay particular tribute to Indigenous servicemen and women.

Their spirit is the same Anzac spirit we honour: a spirit of courage, determination and loyalty to their country and people.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians have fought with British and Australian forces throughout the past 110 years—from the Boer War onwards— and continue to serve today.

During the First World War in 1914 around 1000 Indigenous people fought for their country. Some were at Gallipoli.

The importance, resilience and richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages will be the focus of national celebrations marking NAIDOC Week 2017.

The 2017 theme - Our Languages Matter - aims to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in both cultural identity, linking people to their land and water, and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song.
