Minister Scullion: Township Leasing Delivering for the Wurrumiyanga Community

29 Oct 2017
  • Half a million dollars in rent payments have been released to the traditional owners of the Wurrumiyanga community.
  • Township leases mean more investment and opportunities for traditional owners and local communities.
  • The Coalition Government is committed to working with communities to support the rollout of more township leases across the Territory.

Investment and economic opportunities are being opened up across the Northern Territory with township leasing today delivering for the Mantiyupwi traditional owners.

The Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, today announced that a further half a million dollars in rent payments have been released to the traditional owners of Wurrumiyanga under their township lease.

Under township leasing, following the repayment of an initial advance, traditional owners receive annual rental income that can be used to invest in business and community development activities.

Today’s announcement follows two other township leases that were executed earlier this year – in Mutitjulu and Pirlangimpi.

“Township leasing is delivering for communities across the Northern Territory – providing them with a further source of income that can be used to invest in and transform communities,” Minister Scullion said.

“This shows that the Coalition’s land reform agenda is working and opening up opportunities for commercial development and home ownership.

“We have listened to traditional owners across the Northern Territory who have made it plainly clear that they want more flexibility in township leasing including working towards local control and more frequent payments of rental income.

“When it was in Government, Labor ignored township leasing because it was not committed to working with communities that wanted land reform and more local control.

“The Coalition Government is absolutely committed to township leasing and we are working with communities to support the rollout of more township leases across the Territory.”
