Minister Scullion: More than $200,000 to support youth in Katherine
A successful programme supporting young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Katherine and surrounding communities has received an important funding boost from the Coalition Government.
Minister for Indigenous Affairs and Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, visited the YMCA Katherine and said he was pleased to announce it would receive an additional $217,500 for its Indigenous Youth Programme.
“The YMCA Katherine Indigenous Youth Programme provides specialised support and activities for young people in Katherine,” Minister Scullion said.
“This includes support for young people who are returning to school after attending drug and alcohol or detention facilities, those who display behavioural issues in the classroom or struggle with literacy and numeracy.
“The Coalition Government is committed to working in partnership with our First Australians and we recognise we must support young Indigenous Australians to attend school to get an education and be able to transition into further education or employment.”
YMCA Katherine works closely with government, community service providers and most importantly with local families to help young people overcome personal barriers and explore pathways into education, training or employment.
The Indigenous Youth Programme provides intensive case management, small group activities and information sessions with local mentors, as well as pool fun days, roller-skating and drop-in nights.
Recently, the YMCA has seen a real change in the behaviour and attitudes of eight young people who were previously completely disengaged from school, after they began to attend the Indigenous Youth Programme on a daily basis.
“YMCA Katherine is having a real impact on young lives – that’s why the Coalition Government has invested more than $1.15m in the Indigenous Youth Programme since 2014. I commend the YMCA for its fantastic work in this local community,” Minister Scullion said.
