Minister Scullion: Jobs being created across the Northern Territory under the ABA
- 40 new jobs are being created under the most recent Aboriginals Benefit Account (ABA) round with ten projects being supported.
- The next round for grant funding will open on 27 February 2018 and will close on 27 March 2018.
New jobs are being created across the Northern Territory with funding announced for ten projects supported by the Aboriginals Benefit Account (ABA).
Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, said that the projects announced today will have a significant impact on communities across the Northern Territory.
“The ABA grants program delivers one-off funding to benefit First Australians across the Northern Territory” Minister Scullion said.
“I thank the members of the ABA Advisory Committee, made up of Aboriginal members nominated by the Northern Territory Land Councils and Chaired by Ms Donna Ah Chee, for its advice in this important round.
“I am pleased that a large proportion of the funding is supporting Indigenous controlled organisations that are committed to Indigenous employment outcomes.
“This has certainly been delivered this round with forty new jobs expected to be created in a range of areas.
“This complements the Government’s election commitment to deliver jobs and economic growth. Under the Coalition, some 383,300 jobs have been created (80% of which are full time jobs) this year, four times more than Labor’s last year in Government.”
“I’m pleased to see Indigenous enterprises being supported such as the Kakadu Billabong Safari Camp and a water bottling factory at Rurrangala in East Arnhem Land.
“The projects being supported focused on supporting Indigenous enterprises, culture and improving community infrastructure.
“As we plan for the next ABA grant round, we will be working with communities to unearth innovative and commercially viable business ideas that have the potential to transform communities across the Northern Territory.”
The ABA is funded by payments from the Australian Government equivalent to the value of royalties paid by mining interests on Aboriginal land in the Northern Territory.
The next round for grant funding will open on 27 February 2018 and will close on 27 March 2018.
More information about the next funding round, and the list of projects that have been identified for the negotiation, are available on the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet website.
