Creating Indigenous job opportunities in child care

The Creche and Kindergarten Association of Queensland is working with Indigenous Success Australia to develop a strategy for creating jobs for Indigenous people in the early childhood sector, with the support of the Australian Government’s Indigenous Employment Program.

New centres and programs mean the Creche and Kindergarten Association of Queensland will need to create up to 50 employment opportunities for Indigenous people within their centres. The strategy will help ensure Indigenous Australians meet this demand through Indigenous traineeships and employment programs.

Economic participation is one of the building blocks in the Closing the Gap strategy, agreed by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG). One of the Closing the Gap targets set by COAG in 2008 is to halve the gap in employment outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians within a decade.

In October 2011 the Australian Government released the Indigenous Economic Development Strategy 2011-2018, which aims to provide a framework to increase the wellbeing of Indigenous Australians by supporting greater economic participation and self-reliance.
