Trial Site Profile

Geography

The WA COAG Trial Site is situated in the east Kimberley region and encompasses the communities of Balgo, Bililuna, Mulan, Ringers Soak and Yagga Yagga.

The trial area is approximately 200-300 kilometres to the south and south-east of the town of Halls Creek in north-western Australia.

Communities

Balgo (Wirrimanu), Bililuna (Mindibungu), Ringer Soak (Kundat Djaru), Mulan, Yagga Yagga.

Population

2001 census data shows the total of 1022 people in the following community areas, of which 888 were indigenous. The populations for each community are:

  • Balgo (Wirrimanu) 448 (388 indigenous);
  • Ringer Soak (Kundat Djaru) 117 (106 indigenous);
  • Bililuna (Mindibungu) 213 (175 indigenous);
  • Mulan 168 (149 indigenous);
  • Yagga Yagga 76 (70 indigenous).

Balgo is the largest community accounting for approximately half of the population of the region. Whilst the population of Yagga Yagga is stated as 76 in the last census, this community is currently abandoned.

Sixty per cent of the population in the region is under 25 with only 8 per cent over 55.

Shared Responsibility Agreements

As at April 2005, 12 SRAs have been signed. A range of others are currently under development. In addition to ‘front end’ agreements which provide statements of cooperation between governments and communities, additional SRAs cover:

  • Balgo – Youth activities
  • Billiluna – Youth activities; Administration Centre
  • Mulan – Youth activities; Women’s Centre; Fuel bowsers
  • Ringer Soak – Youth activities, Maintenance equipment
