Trial Site Profile

Geography

The Cape York region covers approximately 150,000 square kilometres of outback in Far North Queensland and contains two main Local Government areas - Carpentaria Shire and Cook Shire.

Communities

Aurukun, Lockhart River, Mapoon (Old Mapoon - Marpuna), New Mapoon, Wujal Wujal, Coen, Hope Vale, Injinoo, Kowanyama, Laura, Napranum, Pormpuraaw and Umagico.

Population

The 2001 ABS Census stated that the Cape York Indigenous population was 6,295 (3,112 males, 3,183 females). This represents 5.9% of the Qld Indigenous population (106,584) and 1.5% of the Australian Indigenous population (410,003).
