Wugularr community wins Heritage and Culture category at theTidy Towns Awards

The community of Wugularr in the Northern Territory has been rewarded for its outstanding efforts by winning the heritage and culture category at the 2012 Keep Australia Beautiful, Australian Tidy Towns awards, presented at Government House in Canberra last week.

The community of Wugularr, also known as Beswick, is situated 120 kms south-east of Katherine and 31 km east of Barunga along the Arnhem Highway. 

The community has a population of around 450 people and resides on the banks of the Waterhouse River. A number of community members travelled to Canberra for the event, which highlighted Wugularr’s pride in its efforts care for their town and surrounding environment.

In presenting the award, Keep Australia Beautiful commended the Wugularr residents for taking a proactive approach to caring for their community. 

The community worked hard, with support from the Roper Gulf Shire Council, to create a place that all residents would be proud to live in.

The Wugularr community places great importance on sharing their history and culture, and caring for their environment.

It is also strongly committed to educating their students through environmental improvement programs about recycling and litter reduction, health and nutrition at school.
